Undergraduate Students

Assistant position
This is largely a volunteer position, although in some cases in can be paid. This position plays an important role in the lab, and is critical to its functioning and day-to-day operations. The position is meant for undergradute students to gain some first-hand experience of what goes on in a scientific lab. You are expected to put in 5-6 hours / week. Assistant should actively take advantage of their situation and ask everyone in the lab what they are doing, and why they are doing what they it. They should attend weekly lab meetings. Students who are interested, willing, and work hard in the lab will be integrated into a research project.

Responsibilities for Assistant:
* Assist in Research projects
* Maintain aquaria room and keep up-to-date log
* Make up artificial seawater
* Assist professor or students with particular tasks
* Type up protocols and organize files on the server


Independent studies student
Honors and independent studies students will be given credit to conduct research in the lab. They will either assist graduate students in an existing research project or will be given an independent research project. During their time in the lab they will be treated as lab members, and will take part in all the normal functioning of the lab, as well as a small part of the maintaining the lab.


Note: I can only accept a limited number of Honor’s and independent studies students, so please come and see me if you are interested and we can talk about future projects.


Summer NSERC student
NSERC will fund undergraduate students to gain research experience during the summer. The deadline for applying for a summer NSERC is usually in January. Please see Jocelyn Forget in the Undergraduate Office (Pavilion Marie-Victorin, Bureau F232-4) for further information.

Summer NSERC students will either assist graduate students in an existing research project or will be given their own small project. During their time in the lab they will be treated as lab members, and will take part in all the normal functioning of the lab, as well as a small part of the maintaining the lab.
